It narrows your range of design choices. It risks using materials and methods that are relatively untested. Recycled materials might have less long-term structural strength than expected. Your rooftop garden might collapse your roof or cause structural members to rot. A fickle public might not like how it looks or smells. Materials which meet the LEEDS certification requirements and have the structural properties to build what the customer wants might not exist. To get permission to build a dam on tribal lands in Montana, builders had to agree to sell hydro power very cheaply to tribal members. For them, heating with electricity is practically free.

When it does not make economic or environmental sense. If you live in an area with Hydro electric power, power generation within your own building would just be an expensive toy that you may never recover the cost of. If your live in a mild climate the cost of highly efficient insulation and building techniques may never pay off during your use of the building. What is the price of exotic materials or complex systems to make a building green versus the benefit? If you are going to use the building for short time it may not be worth it economically. If you are going to use the building a long time (many decades) what is the projected cost of maintaining and repair of these systems versus their savings or benefits. What is the environmental cost of the manufacture of ‘green’ materials used in construction?

It makes sense to build ‘green’ in most cases – many of the techniques and applications are not all that costly or complicated – but the ones people tend to notice and talk about usually are.

In my city, all the newer downtown buildings are hooked into a central municipal chilling system for their AC. It is very efficient and very green, but does not involve planting trees on roofs or million dollar glass panels to control sunlight, just window shades and awnings.

It is important to use cuttings, because the vegetative form of reproduction guaranties the same properties and qualities as mother plant, it`s like a clone.
In reproduction by seeds, the new plants can differ from mother plant in your grandparents garden ( Mendel`s law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendelian_inheritance ).

Only if you are certain the dyes, etc used in the paper are non-toxic. Not worth making a cool lizard like that sick. Good old fashioned newspaper works great.
