This video shows how furniture can be built using green technology (Zipblocks). Zipblocks are green for several reasons. 1) The biggest reason that they are green is simply because you can use them over and over again. If you get tired of what you built, just take it apart and build something else. In this sensetheir value never diminishes. 2)They create zero waste during construction. When you cut Zipblocks in two you dont create waste you only create two smaller blocks! 3)They can be made out of sustainable resources. The ones illustrated in this video were made out of wood. In this video we demonstrate the assembly/disassembly of a small planter box that has a somewhat fancy design. We chose to make it small and somewhat fancy so that we could demonstrate this building systems ability to effortlessly morph into almost any geometric shape. We get a lot of requests for Zipblocks and/or Zipblock pricing. Unfortunately we have not found a manufacturer to make them out of wood yet so we dont have any to sell and we dont have any exact pricing. Despite this, we do have an idea as to what they may cost when they do become available. The blocks in this movie were made out of cabinet-grade plywood. A sheet of this plywood runs around $33 at your local home supply center. You can easily create 333 two inch Zipblocks from a sheet of this plywood. This means that each two inch Zipblocks costs $33/333 = 10 cents. The blocks used to create the planter box ranged from 2 to 6 cubes …

“Modern technology, owes ecology, an apology” is an old saying. In the case of the new technology in building homes, this proverb seems to be false. Those energy and resource efficient green homes built in Austin are real gifts from modern technology to the environment. Green Homes have become a buzz word in Austin and with technological innovation leading to more energy savings, green technology is making progress towards becoming synonymous with ecology.

Breathe Easy

Many green homes are built using toxin-free building materials like bamboo or straw inorder to combat indoor air pollution, which is much worse than outdoor air pollution. Unhealthy air inside a room is capable of causing serious health problems like cancer and respiratory ailments like asthma. The non-toxic building materials used, include paints without volatile organic compounds and toxin-free insulation materials made from soybeans. This means that you can breathe fresh, non-toxic air.

Energy Dependency

The demand for Green Homes has steadily increased nowadays as they attempt to totally eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. These green homes take advantage of renewable natural resources, where possible. These green homes reduces our dependence on conventional energy sources as they generate energy from alternate energy sources such as sun, wind, geo-thermal energy and bio-mass for their energy needs. Moreover water conserving irrigation systems help green homes use 50% less water than standard homes. Water conservation such as this has become very important with many places experiencing less rainfall and longer more intense dry weather conditions.

Green Homes, Cost-Efficient Too

The net cost of owning and operating a green home is usually far cheaper than owning a standard home. Upfront costs may be higher because most of the architects and home builders don’t have the knowledge and experience to build green homes as efficiently as standard homes. However, people living in these green homes save money month by month, as many green homes use 30% less water and 30% less energy than standard homes. Over the years these moderate savings, add up to BIG savings. Green Homes will also keep you healthier, which means, fewer expensive doctor visits and fewer days missed to work.

Regarding design, green homes can be every bit as welcoming, cozy, and spacious as non-green homes. Additionally, there are a wide range of designs available from which to choose when selecting your green home. You can go modern, traditional, neo-classical or for the adventurous even go geodesic dome style. The trend in going green in Austin has grown rapidly. With more and more builders, architects, and contractors learning about Green Homes your choices in a healthy, efficient, and green home are growing!

SO, what are you waiting for? Get your own Green Home and hold the keys for a greener and healthier tomorrow.

At Franzoso Contracting, we not only have the best interests of our customers at heart, we also have a strong dedication to doing the right thing for the environment we all live in. The country’s deep concern over energy efficiency dovetails nicely with our devotion to conserving our customer’s hard-earned money, while simultaneously helping to protect our world’s precious natural resources. So we continually stay up-to-date with all the latest “green” technologies, and carefully train to be well-versed in the best ways to both build new and retrofit existing structures with the most energy-efficient methods and materials available.

In a recent speech, President Barack Obama urged Congress to offer retrofit funding to building and home owners to improve energy efficiency in buildings by replacing doors, roofing, and adding more insulation.

“As the President so eloquently says, insulation is one of the most important components in a building when it comes to reducing energy costs and decreasing carbon footprint,” said Jared Blum, President of the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA).

“In fact, much of the existing building stock which still has thirty, forty or more years of service life could be vastly improved over that long term, if their insulation levels were increased.”

Recent studies reiterate and further emphasize the importance of insulation:

• A paper from the global consulting group McKinsey & Company “Unlocking Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Economy” says an investment of $520 billion in improvements like sealing ducts, adding insulation, and replacing inefficient appliances could produce $1.2 trillion in savings on energy bills

• Another paper from McKinsey “Pathways to a Low Carbon Economy”, names insulation as the product which can provide the greatest return and offer the most carbon abatement.

• A study from Bayer Material Science shows that replacing 1.5 billion square feet of roofs and increasing insulation levels for each of the next five years will result in $10 billion in energy savings and carbon dioxide emissions reduction equal to what is produced by an average coal-fired power plant over 16 years.

As the finest roofing contractor, window and door sales and installation specialist in the tri-state NY area, we pride ourselves in our responsibility to our customers and our environment. Our heartfelt pledge to our clients is to offer the finest service with the highest quality materials at the best possible price. Of course, our workmanship is fully guaranteed, and we’re not happy unless you are.

The buzzwords in clean power for jet planes today are Geared Turbofan (GTF) and Advanced Turbofan (ATF). But in 1989 when this award winning story was produced, everyone was talking about Ultra High Bypass (UHB) jet engines. General Electric (GE) was testing the Unducted Fan (UDF) and a team of Pratt & Whitney and Allison were experimenting with a geared PropFan design. Test platforms consisted of a Boeing B-727 and a then Douglas MD-80 with most flights taking place at California’s Mojave Airport. This video also includes an appearance by the late brilliant Aviation Week Editor Michael Dornheim. He will be missed. Clearly, this video is from our archive, not a recent production.

Growing awareness of the advantages associated with adoption of ‘green’ practices is encouraging majority of SMEs in India to increasingly take to eco-friendly technologies. However, it is not only environmental concerns but also several other factors that are prompting small companies to go green.

Real benefits of adopting green technologies

Earlier small businesses used to think that going green is just another passing fad, but now the perception is gradually changing. Given that adopting environment-friendly modes of production carry real benefits of helping an organisation to reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency and reduce waste, SMEs are willingly adopting green manufacturing technologies.

“Installing clean and energy-saving equipment will help SMEs to cut overheads, reduce fuel consumption for lighting and heating and also enable them to cut down on waste,” said Ankur Gupta, director of Navjyoti, a small-sized power equipment firm in Jaipur.

An increasing number of small enterprises are going green not only because it is turning out to be a more cost-effective measure but also to fulfil their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and enhance their business reputation.

“Companies that make investments in green technologies and support environmental issues can publicise their efforts and gain a marketing advantage as well as build relation with other green companies and clients by sharing their internal green computing practices,” said S Thakkar, proprietor of K Shah and Brothers, a small-sized engineering firm in Ahmedabad.

Treading the green path certainly holds more benefit for SMEs not only in terms of giving them a competitive edge, whether marketing wise or on the cost-saving front, but also helps in paving the way for cleaner and greener environment for future entrepreneurs.
