What is the best Green building / zero energy book currently?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in building green by admin

I am currently reading "The New Autonomous House" but feel that the publish date of 2000 means that it is outdated. Is there any newer books available?

Watch "Living with Ed Begley" on HGTV and check out the resources behind the stuff he does.

Thuja green giants turning brown?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in green construction by admin

I just recently planted thuja green giants. They started to turn whitish at the bottom and now are turning brown. They have not been exposed to freezing temperatures. It is very windy where I live. I am not sure if this from overwatering, too little water or soil condition. It is new construction, clay soil. Anyone have any ideas or experience with these trees?

It could be from a soil problem, too much light or a male dog.

Should the USA give China advance green technology for free

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in green technology by admin

Many people moan about China and its green and human rights records.

Should the USA give China free advanced technology in green power sources, solar, wind, nuclear power plant plans or even build them for China or ways of upgrading them.

That way China becomes more "green" and the money saved can be spend on social reforms and more laws to help "human rights".

Of course it should.

I like your suggestion. Even though i think it’s very unlikely that it will happen, I do believe every country in the world should share technology that will benefit the earth and our human race.

I have a "dream" that one day, America, China and all the other powers of the world would work together Peacefully and Effectively when solving the planets problems.

An green earth free from pollution is what i hope, and lets all hope that no one/party/country will use the Environment as a political tool in order to attack another for political interests. After all, we only have one planet to live in.

As for human right concerns about China, Yes, i agree it’s not perfect, but it’s improving. Every country have human right issues/problems, they only differ on the level which our right it’s being violated. China have problems, but it shouldn’t be an "50step to 100step" escape goat for other countries as they commit Human right crimes themselves.

China is an developing country, it’s going to have a Lot of problems, i mean, even the developed country like America have problems, but, they Will be solved in an timely manner as China is opened more and more to the world, and as the world is doing the same.

Giving green tech for free to China isn’t going to help China save money in order to spend on social reforms, but it will definitely help on bonding the people of two nation together. I like to see that, and i am sure if the two governments so different can come together to solve this critically important problem, much more greater things can be accomplished in the future.

I’m a Filipino citizen. How can I infinitely stay in the Philippines and maintain my US Green Card status?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in how to green by admin

I don’t intend to abandon my US permanent residency. It’s just that I have a business in the Philippines that requires my presence.
I appreciate the answers thanks much! The problem is, I need to stay in the Philippines for more than 2 years. Is there any way (or possibility) that I could infinitely reside in the Philippines without affecting my Green Card status?

You can stay up to 12 months without loosing your green card. If you know before you leave that you will require more time outside the US then you can apply for a re entry permit, which will allow you to stay out of the US for up to 2 yrs and still keep your green card.
However know that once you are out of the US for 6 months it resets you residency time clock for requirements for citizenship. You will start back at day one.

"Green" Cleaning products – how are they working for you?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 in green product by admin

I’ve been using the Clorox "green" products for about a month now and I’m wondering how you think they work. I find that they do not clean as well as traditional products, leaving streaks behind. Is there a way to prevent these streaks?

I love the benifits of using these products – the enviromental ones – but to have to use twice the product and time to clean is making me think twice about them.

What is your experience with these?

Hey Jen~

We’ve been using Target brand called METHOD with a LOT of success……Give ‘em a try and see what you think. The ones from Trader Joe’s are great, too…….BTW, Happy 4th!!!!

Some Homemade Power Supply Ideas and Green Energy Use

Posted on December 28th, 2009 in green energy by admin

Homemade Power Supply

This is also good for voltage regulation/stabilization of some “green energy” voltage sources that may fluctuate/vary a bit and you need a stable/steady voltage souce for a project.

I will put more text here soon, and check often.

The LM317 chip allows for a low number of parts (maby 7 parts, plus cords and.or boxs) to be required to make a fixed or variable voltage/power supply. There are similar chips and I will try to put some numbers up. For the power supplies in the video, the chip is rated at about 1.25V to about 25V and 1.5 Amps of Current. There are some LM317 versions that will allow more or less current also.

You can get just about all the parts at Radio Shack, but their prices are high it seems. Radio Shack is good if you need something right away. You can order the LM317 IC chip from major suppliers, and on Ebay for a deal – some already heat-sinked on a board and ready to go. If you can pick up several at a time to save on shipping, etc. They are only about $1 US now. You can even use machine screws or speaker-jack screws for the input and output terminals.
Radio-Shack also does have some nice electronic “kits” with easy hook up springs for the wires. These are the popular “100 in 1″ or “200 in 1″ , or “300 in 1″ type kits, they are very affordable and have all sorts of endless learning and projects that somene can learn and do, and even use for prototyping your electronic designs and circuits.

If you cant find a transformer or get one cheap enough, a computer power supply is a good option – then can provide many amps of current at fixed 5V and 12Vdc.

I crammed the parts into the box, so it is a good idea to get a box with some extra space, and for additional ideas you may come up with – for instance, having 2 supplies in the same box, or adding meters, or other circuits. A wooden box is also highly possible.

Here are some schematics for using the LM317 chip, or do your own search – most of these circuits are similar, but some have some advantages:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=lm317%20basic%20circuit&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

You need a power supply if you plan on designing circuits and making projects. You can get by with a “wall-wart” transformer if it supplies enough current, but those are usually at a fixed/non-adjustable voltage. You can also purchase premade supplies from many electronic parts distributers, check online.

Here is a nice site that explains the LM317 and has some circuits for you, like for solar battery rechargers, etc: http://www.reuk.co.uk/LM317T-Voltage-Regulator-Chip.htm

Here is a similar IC chip with a lower voltage loss “dropout”: LM2941 : http://www.reuk.co.uk/LM2941-1A-Low-Dropout-Adjustable-Regulator.htm

I know the vid. isnt the greatest it can be, I actually didnt want to do it because I’t been a while since I made it (around 1994) and I’m loose on all that is in it, etc, so I just decided to do a quick vid. that should have been made a while ago so that others can have the opportuniity to make/work with voltage regulators, fixed and/or variable voltages. Anyway there is some vids on similar power supplies made previously here on YouTube.
